I heard you mention Hutson Mason, the UGA backup. And from this rivals page it doesn’t look like we recruited him too hard. I don’t follow recruiting as much as other guys, so, please, pardon me if I’m wrong.

The other thing is that this kid seemed to want to be a Bulldog. He may have been one of those kids that dreamed of playing in the Red & Black. I remember articles from the AJC detailing that he was putting up good numbers and still not receiving interest from SEC schools. Namely, no interest from UGA. And in the end, he gets a personal call from Richt offering him a scholarship to Georgia, and he accepts.

Like I said, I personally don’t follow a lot of recruiting. I just happened to have attended Lassiter High School, so his story got my interest. But it may have been something where we tried to talk to him and found out that he wasn’t interested. Anyways, I don’t know how much playing-time he’ll get with Aaron Murray leading the way.

  2. I’d have to go back and listen to exactly what I said, but the point I was hitting on was that other schools seem to be able to sign top notch QB prospects every year, and we’ve really only had one in Spurrier’s tenure (Garcia). UGA has gotten Murray, Mason and LeMay in consecutive years. Mason wasn’t as highly touted as Murray or LeMay, but his senior year he put up such ridiculous numbers he became hard to ignore. You are correct, I don’t think we were ever seriously involved with him.

The main point is how puzzling it is that we can’t get an elite guy to come here.

Speaking of Lassiter, I was really disappointed that the Printz kid committed to SMU. I think he’s going to be a really good one, and was surprised we didn’t offer earlier.

Thanks for the listen! Any feedback on the podcast is always appreciated.
